New men's lacrosse team needs players

LAKEVILLE — Can you still play?

If the answer is yes, and your sport is lacrosse, the South Coast Silver Sachems just gave you a reason to get the stick out of the closet, dust off the helmet and go play.

A first-year entry in the Olde New England Lacrosse League (ONELL), the Silver Sachems' Over-40 team is in need of a few experienced players to round out its roster. And if you think you might be that guy, you're probably just the guy they're looking for.

"We're looking for guys with ... (cont.)

It never gets old for over-40 lacrosse team

By Ryan Trepanier

BRIDGEWATER — Like an antique pocket watch, interest in a sport can be inherited, passed down from one generation to another.

It was just the opposite for the Collards.

When 16-year-old Ben started playing lacrosse, his father Tom, 38, got into it as well. After helping out with his son's team in the Lakeville youth program, Tom joined up with the SouthCoast Silver Sachems of the Olde New England Lacrosse League.

"We push each other a little bit," Tom Collard, a defenseman, said. "He's pushing me to get out there and get better. He's way ahead of my learning curve. Maybe I can learn a little faster because I'm older and I understand it a little better, but he's still way ahead of me in skills."

The ONELL's name speaks as much for its location as its players. The league, now in it's fifth year, has over-30 and over-40 divisions. This is the first season for the over-40 Sachems (they're allowed ...(cont.)

Growing pains

By John Quattrucci

Lakeville -

There is nowhere to go but up.
Lakeville resident Larry Simpson, founder of the South Coast Silver Sachems over-40 lacrosse team can take heart that next year will be better. It just has to be.

The Silver Sachems wrapped up their inaugural season with a 0-8 record.

“This was a foundation year, Simpson said. “Though I thought we’d be better. We were in a tough division. We couldn’t really measure success with wins. Our intangibles were enough. We had to settle for moments, a good quarter here, a good half there. No one got disappointed or discouraged as the year went on.”

The Sachems are part of the Olde New England Lacrosse League, which includes, among others, The New Hampshire Bald Eagles, The Sudbury Olde Patriots, The South Shore Stragglers and The Winchester Silver Foxes. The team played their home games on Tuesday evenings from late June through mid August at the new football field at Bridgewater-Raynham High School.

“Our team is a collection of men with considerable lacrosse experience who have said, ‘heck yeah, I can still play’” Simpson said earlier this season.

The team is made up of ....(cont.)
